Where the excess negativity of the [[Disciplinary Society controls through external surveillance and obedience|Disciplinary Society]] produced madmen, criminals, and the suppression of the self, the achievement society produces something much more overtly difficult to see, and therefore much more sinister.
[[Disciplinary Society produces criminals as the byproduct of oppression|The binary divide in disciplinary society]] still exists, only this time it is between those who manage to keep their heads above water and those who collapse into burnout or other mental afflictions.
Unlike the external exclusion of disciplinary society, achievement society internalises failure. This type of imbalance produces afflictions not of the physical—the body or material items we possess—rather it produces those of the psychological—burnout, stress, anxiety, depression and narcissism.
Rather than being able to externally witness the punishment of those who do not conform in the disciplinary society, achievement society manages to fuel itself by framing these mental afflictions as a personal failure rather than a systemic issue.
If someone is not able to endlessly and mindlessly produce in the name of optimisation, production and achievement, there must be something wrong with them because the society can find hundreds if not thousands of others who will.
Sadly, this only fuels the cycle of exploitation, leading to a great number of human beings viewing themselves as broken, defective or deficient in some way. [^1]
