Courage is often thought of as synonymous with fearlessness. We can see it in culture, movies, media, books and stories. But that's not the case at all. True courage doesn't get rid of or conquer fear, it fully acknowledges the Parts of us that are fearful and accepts them, allowing them to be there exactly as they are (including their feelings of fear).
Fear is always going to naturally come up throughout our development journey. Our [[Nervous System]] is there to keep us safe as it interprets and scans our environment for potential dangers. But fear isn't necessarily a sign to stop, rather it gives us important information about the edge of our window of tolerance so we can safely work out what we need to keep us safe.
The most transformative moments in our lives rarely ever feel comfortable though ([[Evolution is an act of courage]]), and facing these fears within the optimal zone of our window of tolerance is where growth takes place. This is especially true on the healing journey. When we begin to allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we start to become open to safe and secure relationships as we get our [[Developmental Needs|normal emotional needs]] met. This can be scary, especially if safe and supportive relationships haven't been modelled to us in our early developmental years.
So true courage really isn't about being a hero or being unkind to yourself by pushing through fear. That's resistance, which only creates even more fear. It's about acknowledging, attuning to, and being with our fear and saying "I'm scared, but I'm going to be okay".
