The very nature of life is evolution. So then any evolution, whether that be a natural ecosystem, a species or ourselves, demands courage because it requires the act of letting go what is known yet comfortable in exchange for an uncertain becoming.
Think about the process of a caterpillar transforming into a butterfly. It doesn't just grow wings and fly away, rather it completely dissolves inside of the chrysalis before reforming into something entirely new. When it comes to evolution and transformation there's nowhere to go but forward, and sometimes, that can be really scary.
Us humans are similar, except the bulk of our evolution and development doesn't take place physically, it happens in the Psyche and in consciousness. Our evolution takes place developmentally as we challenge our conditioning, question our beliefs and our identities, and have the courage to step beyond the boundaries of what feels comfortable and safe.
For us, this is the healing journey of [[Individuation]], which is a path back to our original primordial wholeness, requiring the willingness to face our shadow with honesty and integrity. It is here that we begin to shed what [[Donald Winnicott]] called [[Holding Environment|the false self]] as we come to our [[Presence|❍ True Nature]]. This isn't all smooth sailing, in fact it can be rather tumultuous and down right terrifying because everything we knew that kept us safe—our defences, our adaptive strategies, our identity structures, our comforts—literally need to crumble in order to allow something more authentic to emerge. In a way, this process speaks to [[Emergence|emergence]] as all the different Parts of us come together and integrate to reveal an entirely new whole.
I guess the discomfort and fear around our evolution really arises from the space between these two forms—the liminal space where we no longer identify with who we used to be, but can't see who we are about to become. That's why when we go inward and find the resources and capacities already within us to let go and allow our own unfoldment because it truly is one of the most courageous acts we can undertake.
