![[Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychotherapy.jpg]]
Hakomi is a gentle, powerful experiential psychotherapy that uses mindfulness and the body to heal deep wounds formed through early [[Attachment]] and [[Developmental Trauma]].
The method was developed in the 1970s by [[Ron Kurtz]] and his colleagues in the United States, and the word Hakomi is an indigenous Hopi word meaning "How do you stand in relation to these many realms?" or more simply, "Who are you?". The method is ultimately about self-inquiry and transformation through mindful [[Presence]], so the name is quite fitting.
Hakomi is really a synthesis of ancient wisdom traditions, philosophies, techniques and other therapeutic approaches while bringing its own unique flair and organic process.
It draws from many modern body-centred psychotherapies such as Rechian work, [[Lab/01 Incubator/Sleeping/Bioenergetics|Bioenergetics]], [[Gestalt Therapy]], Psychomotor, Feldenkrais, Structural Integration, Ericksonian Hypnosis, [[Focusing]] and Neurolinguistic Programming. Spiritual traditions also deeply influence the Hakomi approach. It is shaped by ancient wisdom traditions like Buddhism and Taoism with its emphasis on non-violence, being with what is, and loving presence.
The root in Hakomi is a paradigm shift in how we approach and understand healing. Healing isn't something that is done to someone else, rather it is something that unfolds naturally when the right circumstances and environment (safety, [[Attunement]], mindful curiosity) are provided. Instead of viewing people as broken or in need of fixing, it sees each person as a self-organising system that naturally moves toward healing when the right conditions are present. It is informed by General Systems Theory and Complexity Sciences, as well as the wider paradigm shifts emerging in medicine, physics, science and psychology that are recognising the importance of uncertainty, complexity and the interconnectedness of all things.
It goes by different names depending on the region; Hakomi Body-Centered Psychotherapy, Hakomi Mindful Somatic Psychotherapy, Hakomi Experiential Psychotherapy, to name a few.
