Our unfoldment and development isn't something we make happen. It is something we allow. Like the butterfly that emerges from the chrysalis, our becoming is a process that unfolds from within. It doesn't need to be forced, only guided, supported and permitted.
But as humans, we tend to resist what wants to naturally move through us and in doing so, we effectively block our own unfoldment and development. Resistance can can simply be described as our unwillingness to be with what is. And what is, is whatever is arising within our present experience like a thought, a feeling or a sensation.
What it is that we usually resist is simply the truth of our present experience. As we begin to awaken to our inner world, we start to feel more—fear, anxiety, grief, vulnerability, loss. Instead of meeting those feelings from a place of [[Presence]], our conditioning comes in and we turn away. This can be explicit through direct avoidance of our experience, or through indirect avenues that we don't have much control over due to things like unresolved [[Trauma]], [[Nervous System]] dysregulation, and a narrow [[Working With Our Window of Tolerance|Window of Presence]]. For whichever reason it may be, we distract, tense up, brace, tighten the muscles, hold the breath, increase activity in the mind. We disconnect from our experience, and therefore from ourselves.
What is really happening when we are resisting our experience is that we are resisting ourselves. This is a type of self-resistance where we are essentially rejecting certain Parts of ourselves. These Parts of ourselves arise within our own consciousness, and instead of being with them, we resist them. In this way, resistance also becomes a form of self-rejection. The Parts of ourselves that we resist and reject don't just disappear, they remain stuck as crystallised structures which make up our ego—our Parts don't melt and release until they feel seen, heard, understood, loved and valued for the exact way they are.
So then, when we resist aspects of our inner experience, we're essentially creating blockages in the natural flow of our life force (see: [[Life Force Energy]]). These stuck, crystallised Parts hold both the emotional truth and wisdom within us which remains unintegrated. And when these Parts of us remain unintegrated, our development and [[Individuation]] journey stalls because the energy that would otherwise naturally allow us to grow, evolve and unfold then becomes used up in our patterns of avoidance and resistance.
